In order to live for God, of course, we must obey Him or keep His commandments. From experience and observation I have found that indulging in drugs/alcohol and fornication are two common things that keep young people from living a life pleasing unto God. Of course there are other sins such as lying, stealing, and unforgiveness; but I believe the two I named above quickly draw young people. I believe this is because one can get immediate physical pleasure or gratification from these things.
There was a time in my life that I struggled to let go of alcohol and fornication . I always knew these things were wrong but like most, I was only thinking about the pleasure they brought me. So the big question is , How do you get delivered from things like this and begin to live for God?
Well I’ll be honest, getting delivered was by no means an “overnight” process as it took much prayer, seeking God’s face, and studying His Word. However, if I could think of one thing that gave me that extra or final push, I would say it was when I finally began to understand WHO God really is and WHY His commandments are really in place.
First of all, God is our HEAVENLY FATHER. And just as an earthly father loves his children and seeks to protect them, just imagine how much more our Heavenly Father does. Remember, He sees ALL-dangers seen and unseen. So with that being said, I don’t believe that God established His law just because He could; but he establish it with the purpose of protecting His children from hurt, harm, danger, misery, confusion, and any other bad thing you can think of.
Let’s just look at this logically. If everyone waited until marriage to have sex and remained faithful throughout their marriage, there would be no risks of spreading STDs or having unwanted children. And as it relates to drugs and alcohol, Do I even have to list all the possible negatives that come along with these? Overuse of drugs and alcohol can have life threatening effects to your health, decrease your ability to think and behave wisely, the list goes on and on. See what all your Heavenly Father is trying to protect you from?
Meanwhile, the devil will try to trick us into thinking that obeying God binds us, limits our fun, or is just down right too burdensome or hard. But I’m telling you that is a lie! The Word of God will let u know that the enemy seeks to bind you but God seeks to give you life and set you free! (John 10:10, New King James Version) And according to II Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV), “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” This is why its so important for us to ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit because we will then be filled with freedom! Let’s take a look at a few scriptures about the Holy Spirit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23, NKJV)
“For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.” (Ephesians 5:9, NKJV)
It is apparent from these scriptures that everything of the Spirit is good and there is no law against any good thing. In other words- when we do things like act in true love towards one another or use self-control in a particular situation, we will not be in the wrong because there is no commandment against these things. So you see, when we have the Holy Spirit living in us, He helps us to obey God because He fills us with His goodness! These scriptures immediately cast down the devil’s lie that living for God is just too hard!
Not to say that its completely easy-because it’s not! The enemy will still try to tempt you to do wrong even after you have made your mind up to do right-In fact he may try to tempt you even more! But God’s help, through the filling of the Holy Spirit, will make the fight a bit easier! Don’t think that resisting temptation and living for God is impossible , with God all things are possible (Luke 1:37, NKJV)!
I pray these words have blessed! As always-meditate on these scriptures, seek God’s face, and ask for His help! Comment, share, and follow if you were blessed by these words!
