First Words

Next Step: Walk in the Spirit

So if you have finally made up your mind to live for God, you may be wondering what you should do next. Well given that you have been baptized in the water and have also received the filling of the Holy Spirit-Now you must continue to “walk in the Spirit” that is within you! Galatians 5:16 (New King James Version) says, “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

If you’re wondering what walking in the Spirit means-It only means that you pay more attention to the desires of the Spirit and honor those desires of the Spirit rather than the desires of the flesh. “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit; and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.” (Galatians 5:17, NKJV) Our flesh will desire after bad or sinful things; but the Holy Spirit within us will always desire after those things which are good because everything of the Spirit is good!

When I finally decided to live for God I had to make a lot of changes. There were just some negative people that I couldn’t hang out with anymore because we no longer had the same mind set. There were some negative conversations I just couldn’t engage in anymore. There were just some things that I couldn’t watch on television, some songs that I couldn’t listen to anymore. I couldn’t do the same things anymore because these things were feeding my flesh, not helping me feel God’s presence nor doing anything for the Holy Spirit that is in me.

Here is a list of things I encourage you to do in order to walk in the Spirit and put good things back into the Spirit:

  • Read the Word of God
  • Mediate/or deeply think on the Word
  • Pray or talk to God often
  • Praise and worship God often
  • Surround yourself with Godly/positive people
  • Have Godly conversations with others
  • Do the work of God often (show love to others, donate your money or time to a good cause, share God’s word with others)

It is apparent from scripture that the Spirit and the flesh are at war against each other! So in order to win the battle, we have got to submerge ourselves in those GOOD things that the Holy Spirit desires after; and soon the flesh will have no choice but to surrender or take a back seat! Of course you will still have fleshly desires from time to time, but if you continue to feed the Holy Spirit that is within you, He will only make you stronger and help you continue to resist temptation.

I encourage you to try some of these things out and see what a difference they will make in your life, there’s no way to go wrong with doing that which is good and right! Just try it! As always I pray these words have blessed! Like/Comment/Share/Follow! Thanks for reading and supporting!
