Obedience: What God Wants From Us

I’ve been guilty of getting frustrated after seeking God for direction, feeling as though I was not getting a “quick enough” response. However, after examining myself, I realized I had some nerve to ask God for more SPECIFIC instructions for my life when I wasn’t even following the instructions He had already laid out for me. We all have instructions already laid out for us in God’s Word, His Ten Commandments. But how many of those commandments are we actually keeping?

I believe more than anything, God desires for us to be obedient and keep His commandments. Yes God may give us a specific task to complete at some point; but before the specific callings, plans, and directions for our individual lives come, God most certainly wants us to obey the general commandments He has already laid out for EVERYONE.

See, we humans have a tendency to complicate things. We’ve always got questions and we always want God to give us a specific instruction or specific direction-and we want it immediately! Should I move to another city? Should I find another job? Should I do this or should I do that? But Ecclesiastes 12:13 (New King James Version) says, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all.” In other words, our complete duty is to fear and obey God!

If you are seeking direction as to how to fulfill your specific calling, seek to keep ALL of God’s commandments first and patiently wait for Him to give you further instructions. Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) says that we should meditate in the Book of the Law day and night and try our hardest to live by it; and if we do this God will give us success. Simple as that-if we want to please God, all we have to do is obey Him!

Say this short prayer:

Lord, help me to be obedient to you in all my ways. Help me to search your Word day and night to learn of your ways so that I can follow them. Help me to patiently wait on you to give me more specific instructions for my life. And help me to understand that you most assuredly reward those who are obedient to you. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen!
