Diligently doing the work of God does not mean you can’t rest! There are several scriptures in the Bible that talk about the REST we have in God. In Matthew 11:28-29 (New King James Version) Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Yes, we have to take up the “yoke” or the responsibility of ministering to people and doing the work of God just as Jesus did. However, Jesus even said it Himself that we also have rest in Him. Just think about it, with all the afflicted people in the world we would burn ourselves out if we tried to help EVERY single person we saw in need.
Let me give you an example: I often visit my local nursing homes and while there I enjoy having one on one conversations with the elderly. We talk about God, things they’ve experienced in their lives, and so many other wonderful things. Any given nursing home may have at least 100 plus patients. Now it would be nearly impossible for me to sit with every elderly person there and give them the same one on one attention and company. So I simply do what I can-I bless the ones that I am able to bless and I pray that God will send MORE people like me to minister to the elderly. This is why the WHOLE Body of Christ is so important because ONE member or believer can’t possibly do all the work that needs to be done-it takes a team!
So whatever you’re calling may be, whether it’s ministering to the sick, pastoring, or seeing about fatherless children; know that you don’t have to OVERWORK yourself. God knows we are only human and that our fleshly bodies, which are only made from dirt, get weak sometimes and REQUIRE rest (Psalm 103:14, NKJV). He knows exactly how much money, time, and other resources we have available to help others. And He even understands the other responsibilities we may have, such as our jobs or taking care of our own families. So I encourage you my friends, put in the WORK, but don’t exhaust yourself. Do what you CAN, while you can, with what you’ve got. And during those times that you need rest or your resources prevent you from being able to do the work of God as you desire, pray that God will raise up another BELIEVER to fill in the gap.
Now there’s much work in the Lord to be done. So enough said…let’s WORK IT!
-To God be the Glory
