Works alone will NOT get us into heaven! Ephesians 2:8-9 (New King James Version) tells us, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” We can work day and night for the Lord but still turn around and sin and essentially “undo” all the good works we’ve done for him. However, when we HUMBLY seek God’s GRACE through REPENTANCE we are able to keep our right standing with God. Now we sin daily because NONE of us are perfect. So just imagine what it would be like if we really tried to justify ourselves by our works. We would literally be working NONSTOP!
Every time we sinned, big or small, we’d have to run and do a good work to make up for it. Yeah, the curse words we let slip out while driving in traffic would equal up to several good works. Or that “little white lie” we told to keep from hurting someone’s feelings would add just another good work to our list. And don’t get me started on all the bad thoughts we think throughout the day, the IDLE words we speak, or the grudges we may be holding on to that would run our “good works tally” right up. We’d literally be working all day long trying to justify ourselves; but THANK GOD FOR HIS SAVING GRACE!
While there is much work in the Lord to be done it is important for us to never feel like we have to work ourselves senseless to make up for our wrong doings! Yes, it is a MUST that we put in some work as being members of the Body of Christ. However, sometimes all the work we need to do is get on our knees and humbly ask God for forgiveness and then ACTIVELY try to resist falling into that same temptation again.
Now there SO much work in the Lord to be done. Whether your work on today is visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, or simply getting on your knees to REPENT; I’m still encouraging you as always to get up…and WORK IT!
-To God be the Glory
